THE CHARNEL BOX

Our workshops are offered throughout the year and vary in skill level and focus, covering everything from basics to more advanced techniques, as well as specialized preservation methods.

STUDIO LOCATION
Workshops are hosted in our home studio in Colorado Springs, located 5 miles south of downtown (Ivywild area). Exact address will be provided 72 hours before class.

FOUNDATIONS WORKSHOP

Our “Foundations Taxidermy Workshop” is a 5 hour class where you’ll learn basic taxidermy skills and go home with a finished specimen. This class is open to all skill levels and those age 12+ are welcome (additional consent needed for minors).

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

1) SKIN: Pelt removal and internal examination
2) PRESERVE: Add drying agents
3) 20 MINUTE BREAK
4) FORM: Create armature and sew up
5) FINAL TOUCHES: Pose and add accessories

WHAT’S INCLUDED?

• 4″ tall mouse (height not including tail)
• All tools & supplies needed for preservation & posing
• 5 hours of hands on instruction
• After care instructions

B.Y.O.D. WORKSHOP

Our BYOD Workshop is designed for those who have their own specimen they’d like to work on and who have already taken our “Foundations Workshop”. This workshop is open to those age 16+.  Note: No birds please as they are a different process. Bird classes coming this summer. Do not bring anything larger than a big dog.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

DAY 1: PRESERVATION
SATURDAY MAY 24, 1-4pm
($0-100/per person)

Organs must be removed and preserved 24 hours prior to DAY 2. You will receive DIY instructions upon registration.

  • Option 1: (FREE) You complete this step at your home. It is the same as the mouse process, except larger. Instructions will be sent on this process upon registration.
  • Option 2: (+ $75) “The Charnel Box” will complete this step for you and will have waiting for you at on Day 2. You may drop off your specimen between Feb 8-May 12.
  • Option 3: (+ $100) You complete this step during a 2 hour workshop at “The Charnel Box”. We will do organ removal, internal examination, and preservation. You will leave your hide overnight at the workspace.

DAY 2: CREATION
SUNDAY MAY 25, 1-4pm
($250/per person)

Organs must be removed and preserved before attending.

We will create an armature, learn posing techniques, sew/stuff the pelt, create the base, and add accessories. This class will be similar to the “Foundations Workshop” but on a larger scale. No birds please.


WHAT’S INCLUDED?

• 3-6 hours of hands on instruction
• All tools and supplies for the workshop will be provided.

• Boards for mounting your specimen provided, but feel free to bring your own.
• Accessories will be provided such as doll hair and fabric, but feel free to bring your own.
• After care instructions
